The Color of the Moment

Design experts weigh in on the season’s must-have hues

With summer on the horizon, we’re looking for an easy yet effective decor swap to introduce into our homes. The natural answer: a new color. But how to distill what’s in the air and make it work for your own home? To make sure we’re on the right track, we’ve rounded up a panel of industry influencers to get their takes on current trends and how to use them.

The Color
Indigo Blue
The Expert Evelina Kravaev-Söderberg (above), head of design at H&M Home
“This deep blue reminds me of Japanese traditional cloth and the color of the ocean. It’s easy to match with neutral shades, and it goes well with wood and straw home decor pieces that are very much in fashion right now.”

“I don’t consider myself girly but I do have a Benjamin Moore color called Paisley Pink on my living room walls—it’s super neutral in my book. I see people get giddy when they walk into this pink room. It’s not for the timid but a different choice that's still pale.”

The Expert Jason Grant, interior stylist and author of Away at Home: Creating Relaxed Spaces of Your Own (Hardie Grant Books)
“I love this because it reminds me of summer—fresh and exhilarating, bright but not too demanding. Bring a color injection into your home with a cushion, tableware, or a vase in this shade.”

The Color Saffron
The Expert Justina Blakeney, designer, artist and author of The New Bohemians: Cool and Collected Homes (Stewart, Tabori and Chang)
“I love this color because it's cheery without being cheesy—my living room has a saffron sofa. Saffron is an all-natural dye, like indigo. As our lives get increasingly technological, I believe that our propensity toward nature grows stronger.”

The Color Black
The Experts Monica Khemsurov and Jill Singer, cofounders of online magazine Sight Unseen
“The whole all-black, ‘murdered out’ trend started last year, its pinnacle so far being the release of the ebony Eames Lounge. But we don’t see any signs of it abating, especially in lighting.”
