Ceilings are tricky things: they should be subtle enough to blend into the background but also distinctive enough to carry a room. Short of altering the architectural structure with beams and arches, there's not much you can do to change the character of this often featureless standby. Or is there?

Next time you find yourself wishing you could add a little personality to a basic ceiling—and you don't want to try this wallpaper idea—consider your friendly neighborhood hardware store. Molding and trim can run you as little as a dollar a foot, but the effect these discreet pieces of wood impart on a ceiling is immeasurable. Don't believe me? Just take a look at the contrast treatment given to the one in Spanish designer Georg Kayser's living room, above. (Note: a chic chandelier medallion helps.) If interior designers are any indication, all-white versions are just as appealing. Case in point: the ceiling molding in Kelly Wearstler's Beverly Hills home and Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan's New York City apartment. Have you tried this idea in your home?
