The very busy Sara Gilbane
recently shared her thoughts on holiday decorating with me. The designer, who started with Celerie Kemble
and now has her own flourishing design business, leads a busy life as a wife and mother of two. Her New York apartment is as delightful as she is and was decked for the holidays in kid-friendly fashion when I dropped by, complete with a charming Advent wreath her daughter had made in Sunday school.(The Advent wreath Sara's daughter made; ph. © Michael Devine)
When it comes to holiday entertaining, Gilbane likes to make a music playlist ahead of time to set the tone of the party. Old-fashioned champagne coupes make a glass of champers seem more glamourous and, of course, one must add to the ambiance with candles—lots of them.
Gilbane's holiday entertaining isn’t limited to just friends and family—two tiny tots necessitate some serious consideration for Santa Claus, whose cookies are sourced from Eleni's
at New York’s Chelsea Market. She describes them as “awesome” and often gives an assortment as gifts to friends. When it comes to decorating the tree, Gilbane suggests ornaments have some sentimental value, but be wary of a look that's too matchy-matchy. Now, it's time to deck the halls!
