These cupcakes aside, Halloween doesn't have to be all sugar all the time. For proof, look no further than this green-juice cocktail by Diana Yen. Made with good-for-you fruits and veggies—and a healthy shot of vodka, because what is Halloween if not a night of debauchery—the frothy concoction resembles something you might find in a witch's cauldron, maybe one you stumbled upon in a spooky graveyard on a dark, dark night. The pièce de résistance: a smoky, singed rosemary sprig placed just so. If you squint your eyes a bit it looks like a broomstick, ready to conjure up ghostly spirits into the wee hours of the night. Witch’s Brew
Serves 1
- ½ cup cucumber
- ¼ cup celery
- 1 small lime, peeled
- ½ lemon, peeled
- ½ cup kale
- 1 inch piece of ginger, peeled
- 1 green apple, halved
- 2 ounces vodka
- 4-inch sprig of rosemary, leaves removed, leaving 1-inch tip
- maraschino cherry, rolled in red glitter
Juice all vegetables and fruit. Combine with vodka in a shaker. Shake vigorously
and pour into brandy or globe glass. Garnish with glittered cherry and rosemary. To serve, light rosemary broomstick with match and blow out to achieve smoky effect.
