Counter to what many people believe, citrus fruits are actually at their best in the colder months of the year. So when family and friends gather for the holidays, skip the spicy, full-bodied cocktails and opt instead for a bright, refreshing one that makes use of the season's bounty. Here, Lonny contributor Diana Yen has transformed the classic gin and tonic with a tangy twist, adding fresh blood orange juice and a hint of earthiness thanks to thyme-infused simple syrup.
Blood Orange Gin and Tonic
- 1 ½ ounces dry gin
- 3 ounces blood orange juice, peel reserved for garnish
- 1 tablespoon thyme simple syrup (recipe follows)
- 4 ounces tonic water
- sprigs of thyme, for garnish
Fill a tall glass with ice. Add gin, juice, and thyme syrup. Top with tonic water and stir gently. Garnish with an orange peel.
Thyme Simple Syrup
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup water
- 4 sprigs thyme
In a saucepan over medium heat, bring sugar and water to a boil. Remove from heat and add thyme sprigs. Allow to cool for 25 minutes. Discard thyme before using.
