Veronica Miele Beard: When we finally sit at our desks [for the workday], Veronica and I don’t speak. We zone in and focus on what we’re doing. She wanted the window and to see into the office [to know] when guests arrive; I prefer the quiet, tucked-away corner. The little time I have at my desk I spend organizing and planning what’s next, whether it’s the next jacket style or sports practice for my kids. My desk is a big deposit of my entire life.
Veronica Swanson Beard: My desk is definitely a sit-down-and-get-it-done place. I’m a major nester and need my work environment to feel personal. I’m constantly tracking down inspiration and imagery to reference—I could do it all day. When we designed the showroom with Asia Baker, I wanted to make sure that elements of interior design from my home, such as the black floors and leopard upholstery, translated into the new space, but that the showroom felt like its own chapter.
VMB: When I left Wall Street and went into fashion, I initially felt inferior because I was the “businesswoman.” Starting Veronica Beard has given me the confidence and freedom to express my artistic side in many ways. It’s been one of the most fulfilling and all-encompassing experiences in my life.
VSB: When you have your own business, home and work tend to bleed together. Veronica and I do a really good job of compartmentalizing the two as much as we can, but sometimes it’s just impossible. Applications to schools and grocery lists are a constant topic of discussion around here. We have tears and triumphs. Kids are in and out of the office and sometimes we need to work from home. Thank God there are two of us so we can divide and conquer.
VMB: India’s note [underneath pen] is very special to me. She’s the fourth of my five kids; she’s left-handed and very independent. She writes me a lot of notes, and I keep them everywhere.
VSB: I adore costume jewelry and love big cocktail rings, earrings, and bracelets. The hoops are by Kenneth Jay Lane and I would buy them in every color. I keep them in my bag so I can throw them on if I need to up the ante a bit. I also love anything monogrammed—personalization makes such a difference! The pouch is from Leontine Linens. I love everything Jane Scott Hodges does. The photograph of my dad and me means so much. It was taken right before we walked into the church [on my wedding day]. He was giving me some last-minute life advice and telling me how happy he was that I had found Jamie. Jamie and I will be married 10 years this November. Three little boys and a business later, he is my perfect partner.
VMB: I still talk on the phone a lot. I speak to my mom daily—maybe more than once a day. It’s family first for me, but it all feeds into the work—which is our brand mantra. The more we bring our family into our work, the better we are at deciphering what all women need in order to juggle both.
