A Budget-Conscious Sidetable Makeover

It was 2011; the Pantone color of the year was Tangerine Tango, a sultry bright that had me weak in the knees. I knew I had to find a way to incorporate the hue into my new apartment but couldn't think how. An accent wall? A vase? A rug? Then I saw this side table on sale for a measly fifteen dollars at an Urban Outfitters. An underwhelming shade of putty grey, the piece called out for a happy makeover and I knew I'd found my DIY project.

I started by sanding and priming the piece to make sure the color would fully adhere to the surface. I used Krylon spray paint to get a glossy, lacquer-like finish that would pop in my small space. To really make the piece my own, I switched out the standard knob for a more charming faux-cut crystal one from Anthropologie. Et voilà—a statement piece was born!
