To anyone with eyes, Emily and Corey Petrick are living the sweet life. Nearly two years ago, the husband-and-wife team decided to shake up their L.A. routine to launch Whisk and Whittle, an artisanal bakery and wood shop run out of their Echo Park home. A professional baker, Emily whips up beautifully composed cakes, cookies, and confections to order; meanwhile, Corey handcrafts artful kitchen accessories in the couple's wood shed, a creative departure from his day job as a film producer. The fruits of their labor have naturally become the subject of one of our favorite Instagram feeds, where delicate desserts and simple table setups mingle with snaps that capture the natural beauty that fills their world. If this is what domestic bliss looks like, it's one wormhole we're happy to fall into.
"I started baking as a little girl with my mom and my grandmother. Some of my favorite memories from childhood are of time spent in the kitchen with them. It's always been all about the process for me. I think I bake the way most people cook: tasting, adjusting, adding a dash of this, a handful of that. I make a total mess of myself and my kitchen, but I have so much fun doing it. I have to pull it together a bit when it comes time to fill cake orders, and that becomes fun in a different way. It becomes soothingly methodical. I get to let loose again once it comes time to decorate."
"My favorite thing to make (and, conveniently, my favorite thing to eat) is pie. I make pie like a mad scientist: I never use a recipe, I just toss things in a bowl and see how it comes out. I’m always inspired by good, fresh, seasonal produce. I come back from my weekly farmer's market runs just aching to get into the kitchen and create. As for the designs of my cakes, I draw a lot of inspiration from nature. I love it when my cakes look like wild things—vines and fruit and flowers winding all over. Like I just found them growing on a hillside."
"I think my aesthetic is pretty simple. Not in a minimalist way—I wish I was the kind of person who could maintain that kind of lifestyle! I think natural is the better word. I love natural patterns and textures, neutral color palettes. I strive to make our home a place that is comfortable and tells a story—nothing flashy or fancy. The same goes for my Instagram feed, which is appropriate since my baking is pretty rustic. I tend not to worry about aesthetic perfection, especially when it comes to pies and pastries. I find that prettier generally doesn’t mean more delicious, and I'm never willing to sacrifice flavor. I wont use fondant for that very reason. It looks perfect, but yuck! Who wants to eat that?"
"I dream of running off and living a super-simple, quiet life. I want a veggie garden and goats and kids running around barefoot everywhere. Of course, I'd want a pretty killer kitchen, too. I love working with my hands, and we are both really resourceful. If Corey and I had the time and opportunity, we could make pretty much anything we could ever possibly need. I'm so drawn to that idea! I love our neighborhood in Echo Park, but sometimes I think our priorities can get a bit askew here."
