Q&A with Kelley Proxmire

Name: Kelley Proxmire

1. Antique or modern?

Antique primarily – with a touch of modern (art especially).

2. City or country?
City. Love the activity and the action. Since I rarely cook, we love the good food in our neighborhood restaurants and often see our neighbors.

3. Which colors do you use most?
Never saw a shade of blue I did not love!


4. Favorite materials or textures?
Linen, especially linen damasks.


5. What is your favorite interior design-related word?
Tablescape.


6. Does your home look like the one you grew up in?
No.

7. Does a room need a view?
A focal point in a room can enhance its beauty, but there doesn’t have to be a great view outside.

9. Which design blog, website, TV show, or magazine would you be lost without?

10. What qualities do you most admire in a room?
A room should be pretty and practical!


11. What is a forbidden word in your house?
Hate.


12. Design rule you like to break?
Considering the colors in artwork to blend with a room’s interior

13. What is your favorite room in the house?
Living Room. It contains many items I’ve purchased on various trips and reminds me of all the wonderful places I’ve been able to visit, including Rome, Paris and Prague. They make me happy. Plus, the yellow/white/blue color scheme is cheerful and timeless.


14. What is your most treasured possession?
The first original oil painting I purchased by artist Fred McDuff.


15. What do you wish you could do without?
Diet Coke.


16. What are you afraid to DIY?
Anything that has to do with sewing fabrication, such as pillows, table skirts, etc.


17. Have you ever had a change of heart about an object or a style?
Fortunately, not very often.


18. If you could live in one historical figure’s house, whose would it be?
Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ NYC home. I’ve read that she had many beautiful objects that were not necessarily valuable, but that had an intrinsic beauty/appeal to them – a mix of the good with the not so good – one of my favorite ways to collect.


19. On what movie set would you like to live?
The Great Gatsby

20. What is your favorite design errand or journey?
Sourcing accessories for projects, looking for one-of-a-kind items at antique stores, antique emporiums and estate sales, and visiting the Paris Flea Market.


21. To which country would you move for the design?
Italy.


22. What's your favorite hotel?
The Fours Seasons Biltmore in Montecito, California

23. If you were reborn as a piece of furniture or an object, what would it be?
A table lamp – to give “light!”


24. What does "accessible home design" mean to you?
Being creative with design and making it personal, taking into account one’s budget, lifestyle and likes, while considering a room’s functionality.
