"I equate furniture with sculpture—made to be collected as well as used," says San Diego designer Lorena Gaxiola. Her just-launched home decor line certainly straddles style and function, introducing novel shapes, patterns, and hues to traditionally unadventurous categories such as silverware and china.

Showstoppers include a brass flatware set with handles sculpted into the shape of an owl, faceted glassware in fluorescent shades, and a whimsical chandelier that resembles a riot of golden arrows.

Playing off both her Mexican heritage and her fine-arts background, Gaxiola has created a lifestyle brand that speaks to the new trend of curated eccentricity: "I don't expect to change the world of design," she says. "I simply want to change people's perceptions of conventional objects."
