Stepping off lower 5th Avenue into the whitewashed world of Claudette, one might imagine themselves in a Moroccan sidewalk café or an offhandedly chic lunch stop-off in Provence, market basket in hand. The daydream-inducing atmosphere is no coincidence. With partner Mark Barak, proprietor Carlos Suarez, of Manhattan hotspots such as beam-me-to-Tuscany Rosemary's and British Manor-ringer Bobo, called on his knack for transportive space-making when conceiving the Greenwich Village restaurant.
Dolores Suarez and Caroline Grant of Dekar Design tackled the interiors, which combine North African and French country influences to soothing effect. The thoughtful spaces—a charming entry, a dining room dotted with small tables, and a 14-seat bar—exude the unfussy elegance of a lovingly lived-in French country home.
Order a glass of Rosé on tap at the bar, which is sheathed in hand-painted pastel tiles and topped with hanging wood pendant lights. Stroll across the rustic dining room floor, crafted from 100-year-old reclaimed barn-wood siding, to a table set with ticking stripe linens and bistro-worthy blue-rimmed plates. Or simply cozy up on the window banquette while you wait to be seated—and know that be it Manhattan, Marseille, or Marrakech, you're right where you need to be for a memorable meal.
