If you have the prettiest chocolatier in the 'biz and a glam eclectic designer team up to create a candy store, you can expect it to be like nothing you have ever seen. So when Compartes called on Kelly Wearstler to design their flagship retail space at Westfield Century City, they knew they were in for a treat. The result is a gorgeous deco-inspired space that feels like a modern Emerald City.
"We used a lot of Art Deco and signature Compartes elements in the space, evoking the rich Hollywood history of the company which has actually been in business since 1950 and served clients like Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis," says Compartes CEO and lead chocolatier Jonathan Grahm. "The patina copper outside of the store — which ends up looking turquoise and aqua and is amazingly gorgeous, stunning, and eye catching — is a return to the original colors I used when I took over Compartes when I was 19 years old."
Any fans of Kelly Wearstler's unique style will definitely see her handiwork in the space. The counters are accented with wave-y marble and everything has a glam gilded finish. The designer even customized many of the light fixtures herself!
"The color of the new store is also a new look for Compartes using this amazing custom green plaster throughout the space when our stores have traditionally been white," notes Grahm. "Kelly actually called me on my cell one day when I was driving to work and said she’s got this great idea — make the store green inside! I paused for a little when she said it because I would’ve never thought of that. She showed me some samples, played with colorful chocolate bars against it, and they popped even more than the white — it was brilliant!"
One of our favorite parts of the store is the Louis Nevellson-inspired wall with cut-outs in geometric shapes inspired by the Compartes' chocolate bar triangles. The design feels straight off the set of The Great Gatsby.
Another cool feature? A custom frozen hot chocolate machine to help sweeten up a hot L.A. day. "We make thick rich European-style hot chocolate from Compartes signature dark chocolate and freeze it in this state of the art machine," says Grahm. "It makes a beverage that is truly like drinking a hot chocolate, but frozen. Think of the greatest Parisian hot chocolate from places like Angelina in Paris but frozen LA style and made with Compartes dark chocolate!"
With doors opening next month, we might need to book a golden ticket to visit the incredibly sweet spot.
