In the hierarchy of interior design, few places rank lower on the totem pole than gyms. Look at any stylish hotel: the sleek public spaces, the perfectly considered guest rooms, the envy-inducing spa areas, the Insta-worthy restaurants. Then take a gander at the fitness center. One of these things is not like the other, right? At Lonny, we've seen many a residential project taken down a notch by the owner's generic workout space. They're enough to make us drop our green juices in protest.
Not so at Rise Nation. The L.A.–based fitness studio eschews the standard mirrored surfaces and fluorescent lighting for a more organic aesthetic, including expansive windows that take advantage of health-improving natural light and a rotating roster of artwork by local artists. A minimalist black-and-white palette and natural finishes—such as the wood-planked elevator bank and marble-tiled bathrooms—provide a soothing counterpoint to the jarring colors often found in workout spaces across the country. And a rooftop patio features communal tables with built-in centerpieces of succulents and cacti.
But perhaps the most impressive design element is the LED art fixture installed in the main studio. Designed by Black Egg Design Co. and inspired by the look of natural rock formations, the ceiling flickers and glows to the beat. Here's to doing your design eye and your body some good at the same time.
