AVO Hand Painted Leather Rugs

You Won't Believe What These Rugs are Made From

Richly-printed floor coverings are nothing new to us here at Lonny HQ. From the overdyed Persian rugs we've long admired at ABC Carpet to the blocky geometry of Jonathan Adler's flat weaves, "rugspiration" is in no short supply. But when the photos of Brooklyn-based AVO's stunningly patterned cowhides came across my desk I had the undeniable feeling that I was seeing something truly novel: a brilliant manipulation of a material that is notoriously difficult to work with.

You Won't Believe What These Rugs are Made From
Maker Brit Kleinman, who spent five years as head bag designer for Jack Spade, hand paints the graphic motifs onto milled full grain vachetta—tanned, unpigmented cowhide. Pristine-looking though they are, these rugs are made for walking (on), treated with a bleed-resistant, wax and water-based stain topped with a clear sealant. We think one would look just as chic on a well-trodden floor as it would hanging on a bare wall as a purely decorative display.
